Duke is a basketball blue blood whose NIL economy has historically centered on that sport, but its football program made national news in 2025 by signing transfer quarterback Darian Mensah to a deal widely reported among the largest in college football. Mensah has since moved on to Miami for 2026, which illustrates how quickly NIL rosters turn over. Basketball continues to attract elite talent with substantial deal support, and Duke's private status means little is formally disclosed. Under the House settlement the school can pay athletes directly, subject to the cap that opened around $20.5 million and rises annually, an amount Duke must divide between a nationally prominent basketball program and an increasingly ambitious football operation.
